Buying a new Windows personal computer:

1- Decide whether to buy a laptop or a desktop computer: some considerations are: price, portability, space available in your home, availability of flat screen monitor, keyboard and mouse. Be sure a laptop comes with the latest wireless technology.

2- As of 7-08 it is still possible to order a pc with Windows XP. Or will you go with the current operating system: Windows Vista (Home Premium Edition not Basic)?

3- Dual Core Processor

4- RAM (random access memory): 1 GB for Windows XP; 2 GB for Vista

5- Storage Memory: whatever comes with the machine you are looking at will usually be fine unless you play big games or edit and store video.

6- RW-CD/DVD drive

7- 17” - 19” flat screen monitor. Larger if you have big vision problems or wish the best possible display for photos.

8- Keyboard and mouse if needed.

9- What software comes with? What software will you need? MSOffice which includes Word and Excel? Microsoft Works which includes a smaller version of Word and spreadsheet, data base etc? Quicken or financial program? Updated greeting card program? Be aware of other addons that will make your eventual total higher.

The idea is to do your research before you go to a computer store or website. There are good deals available. Compare prices between at least 2 companies you may lean toward. Be sure to find a package as close the the specs above as possible.

Check out PC Magazine on the web or in the libraries for various buyers guides.
